Empathy, creativity, and innovation drive my teaching. Students need to feel comfortable and safe before they can learn, so I start from acceptance, regardless of background or expertise. I encourage critical thinking, including disagreement with me. I help students to connect to their individual values and motivation, rather than artificially providing my own to them. I provide students a general road map of the process of research and then journey with them, tailoring activities, and explanations to individual students. I provide various creative techniques for students to push past road blocks, since creativity helps us see the problem in new and diverse ways.
