Acceptable Use of Generative AI

The use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Grammarly, Gemini, etc.) is permitted in your academic work at Adler University for the following activities and must be cited. Please note, if your instructor’s syllabus doesn’t contain all of these use as acceptable, follow the restrictions in your syllabus.

  • Brainstorming and refining your ideas.
  • Fine-tuning your research questions.
  • Drafting an outline to organize your thoughts.
  • Checking grammar and style.
  • Using AI tools as a “study buddy” (e.g., generating practice quizzes, summarizing readings, or assisting with brainstorming).
  • Analyzing information independently after using AI to generate summaries or insights.

Any AI Use Must be Cited

Students are responsible for ensuring the accuracy and ethical use of any information generated by AI tools. AI-generated content must be properly documented and cited according to the appropriate citation style for your discipline (e.g., APA citation guidelines).

Unacceptable Use of Generative AI

The use of generative AI tools is not permitted for the activities listed below. This list is not exhaustive.

  • Impersonating you in classroom interactions, such as composing discussion board posts or contributing to Teams, Canvas, or other online chat or discussion forums. on your behalf.
  • Completing group work assigned to you.
  • Writing drafts or complete versions of any assignments or generating images.
  • Copying and pasting AI-generated sentences, paragraphs, images, or entire papers as submissions for class assignments.
  • Using AI tools for admission or scholarship applications.
  • Inputting Protected Health Information (U.S.)/Personal Information (Canada)
  • Using AI as a clinical diagnostic, formulation, or treatment plan tool.
  • Relying on AI-generated data analysis without proper verification.

Academic Integrity and Documentation

Students must ensure that their use of AI does not violate intellectual property laws, produce misinformation, or generate unethical content. Any unauthorized use of AI tools will be considered a violation of the university’s Academic Honesty Policy and Statement of Student Responsibilities.

Consequences for unauthorized use of AI tools: Academic integrity review or other disciplinary action as per university policy, as determined by Academic Leadership personnel (e.g. faculty, Dean, Student Affairs officer, Provost, etc.). This could include a referral to the Student Comprehensive Evaluation Committee (SCEC).

Guidelines for Ethical AI Use

Always verify AI-generated information for accuracy and reliability.

  • Put AI-generated content into your own words and analyze it critically.
  • Use AI to assist and enhance learning, not replace personal effort and academic integrity.
  • When in doubt about whether an AI tool is permitted for a specific task, ask your instructor for clarification.
  • Any AI use must be documented and cited. See above.

By adhering to these guidelines, students can responsibly integrate AI tools into their learning while upholding academic integrity and ethical standards.
