How do I find OER materials for my course?

Whether you are looking to save your students money on the cost of course materials or simply want every student to have their course materials on the first day of class, begin searching for open textbooks in this select list of high-quality OER collections.

OER Course Material Collections

  • Open Textbook Library (University of Minnesota)
    Contains over 1,100 open textbooks, many of which have been peer-reviewed by faculty from a variety of colleges and universities to assess their quality.
  • Pressbook Directory
    This directory provides a searchable index of complete OER texts published across Pressbooks networks.
  • OpenStax (Rice University)
    High-quality, peer-reviewed, openly licensed, introductory college textbooks that are absolutely free online and low cost in print. There are an increasing number of ancillary materials for each text.
  • LibreTexts (University of California, Davis)
    Bookshelves area in LibreTexts Library holds texts that can be used either as is or as content for building customized remixes
  • Milne Open Textbooks (SUNY Geneseo)
    A catalog of open textbooks authored and peer-reviewed by SUNY faculty.
  • MERLOT
    Collection of openly licensed learning materials of all types, including case studies, practice exercises, blended courses, tutorials, plus more.

OER Search Engines

These OER Search Engines are an effective way to search across many OER collections.

  • OER Commons
    Searchable collection of OERs in a variety of subject areas, includes textbooks. It is a project created by ISKME (Institute for the Study of Knowledge Management in Education). 
  • OASIS  
    Openly Available Sources Integrated Search (OASIS) "is a search tool that aims to make the discovery of open content easier. OASIS currently searches open content from 114 different sources and contains 440,338 records." Developed by SUNY Geneseo Milne Library
