Turnitin (Writing - Plagiarism)

Turnitin compares student work to content available on the internet, in article databases, and in previously submitted student papers and produces a similarity report that identifies how much of a student's work is similar to works found elsewhere.

Turnitin also attempts to identify how much of a student paper was created by AI tools such as ChatGPT.

Be aware that AI detection feature is not always accurate. Studies have identified the risk of false positives, and the inaccurate flagging of writing by non-native English speakers as AI-generated by AI detection software.

For Faculty

Faculty can enable Turnitin in Canvas for specific assignments and can submit an individual student's assignment to check for originality. Faculty can also use Turnitin outside of Canvas so long as they have access Turnitin through Canvas at least once.
