Information Literacy Instruction Sessions: FAQ: Instruction Sessions

Do I need to be present?

We encourage you to be present in your class during the library session.

  • Sends a strong message of support to your students
  • Helpful when faculty tie our lessons more concretely to their specific class

How long are instruction sessions?

This depends on your class and the needs of your students.

The first year pro dev seminar classes are 60 minutes, which allows for adequate coverage of all learning objectives, and for incorporating active learning to ensure students retain the information.

However, some courses might prefer a longer session (75-90 minutes), depending on course content and student needs.

I can also provide mini sessions (5-20 minutes), depending on what information needs (and time constraints) your class has and are happy to work with you on session length. For example, if you are presenting a research assignment to your students, I can be present to allow students to ask general questions about your expectations for the assignment as well as research-based questions.

Where can instruction sessions take place?

In person - Your classroom

Via Zoom

What can I expect during a session?

Each type of session contains different techniques to encourage engagement. Different styles and methods of approaching instruction lend themselves to different topics.

Active learning is a key element of all instruction sessions.
