APA Workshops

APA Basics 

This workshop will review basic elements of citing and formatting in APA and cover the ways of using sources: quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing. Adler writing consultant Mark Peters will also discuss how to make the APA manual your friend instead of a source of stress. Participants should get a copy of the APA 7 manual before the workshop, but please join even if you haven't been able to!

Get to know the APA manual better as you work on your dissertation. We'll discuss tips and tricks for making the manual more user-friendly, and there will be a Q&A.

Paraphrasing & Plagiarism 

Our workshop on paraphrasing and plagiarism offers the essential skills to accurately restate information in your own words while maintaining academic integrity. It provides you with the understanding of different forms of plagiarism, advanced paraphrasing techniques, the importance of proper citation. This workshop will empower you to produce original and high-quality academic work confidently.

The Writing Process

This workshop will look closely at the various stages of the writing process and why they're important. Adler writing consultant Mark Peters will focus on pre-writing, drafting, getting feedback, revising, editing, and proofreading, with examples of how to approach each stage. The emphasis will be on how the writing process can make your writing better and less stressful to produce. 

Grammar: The Passive Voice 

Focusing on the passive voice, this grammar workshop aims to improve your writing clarity and precision. During this workshop, we will delve into the academic use and identification of passive voice.

The Essentials of Writing Dissertation Introductions

This workshop will guide participants through the key elements of a compelling introduction, including how to establish the research problem, articulate objectives, provide background context, and justify the significance of the study. Whether you're just starting your dissertation or revising your draft, this session will equip you with practical strategies to create an engaging and clear introduction that captures your readers' attention and aligns with academic standards.

Advanced Workshop on Writing Dissertation Introductions

CVs and Cover Letters

Get some advice on those crucial CVs and cover letters as you apply for internships. Learn some do's and don'ts for preparing these important materials. 

Crafting Literature Reviews

In this workshop, participants will learn how to effectively search for, evaluate, and synthesize scholarly sources to construct a coherent and well-organized literature review. Topics will include identifying gaps in the literature, developing a critical voice, and ensuring alignment with your research questions.

Join the Online Campus Librarian, Dorinne Banks, as we explore the most widely used research tools and services at Adler Library. Participants will leave with a better understanding of using library resources for their course assignments.

RefWorks is a web-based bibliography manager that allows you to manage all your research citations in one place.

In this 60-minute workshop, attendees will learn how to: export references from library databases; create a library to store PDFs: utilize the Word processing plug-in [Reference Citation Manager] for in-text citations; and create a bibliography in APA format.

Whether you’re researching the literature for your dissertation’s chapter two or for a course assignment, this hands-on workshop will help you build the search skills needed to effectively locate scholarly sources on your research topic.

AI Research and Ethics

What does artificial intelligence mean for research? In this workshop, we will explore the basics of large language models, like ChatGPT and how they can be used ethically in research through the lens of academic integrity. This will provide students with a guide for knowing when AI use is acceptable in research, some best practices, and how AI tools can be cited using APA.
