The Writing Center: Turnitin

For Students:

Students can check their own work in Turnitin using the Draft Coach feature, a plug in for MS Word online. Information on using Draft Coach is available here.

Contact IT for additional information.

For Faculty:

Faculty can enable Turnitin in Canvas for specific assignments and can submit an individual student's assignment to check for originality.

Faculty can also use Turnitin outside of Canvas.  At this time, you will need to use Tunritin within Canvas first since that creates an account for you.

  • Navigate to turnitin.com, select login, but reset your password (Forgot your password? Click Here)
  • Enter the email address that you use in Canvas (this would have been passed over to turnitin.com)
  • Follow the steps to set (reset) a password for your account
  • Once you can login as an instructor, you will enable quick submit
  • There will then be a Quick Submit tab at the top of the page, and you will upload documents via quick submit

If this does not work, contact IT for assistance.

Turnitin compares student work to content available on the internet, in article databases, and in previously submitted student papers and produces a similarity report that identifies how much of a student's work is similar to works found elsewhere.

Turnitin also attempts to identify how much of a student paper was created by AI tools such as ChatGPT.

Please be aware that the AI detection feature is not always accurate. Studies have identified the risk of false positives, and the inaccurate flagging of writing by non-native English speakers as AI-generated by AI detection software.
