Library Survey Response AY23-24

Quiet space

FEEDBACK: Many students noted that they love the quiet space provided in the library.

ACTION: The library is now designated as a space for quiet group and individual study. Those who want a space to talk can use open classrooms and the various tables and furniture around campus.

Printers are confusing

FEEDBACK: The printers/copiers are confusing to use.

ACTION: The library has no involvement with the printers.  IT has added instructions for using the printers, taped to the printers in the computer lab. The IT help desk is located on the 16th floor and they can provide assistance.

On campus workshops

FEEDBACK: Students asked for more on campus events, such as workshops.

ACTION: We held offerings for two advanced research workshops on campus, but registration was so limited, we held those as individual appointments instead.

Library and Writing Center workshops continue to be offered online each semester and this format has proven to be more popular due to the flexibility it provides.

More outlets

FEEDBACK: Students asked for more outlets in the library.

ACTION: The Library is working with facilities to see if this is feasible for facilities to add over the summer in time for Fall 2024.

Seating and Study Areas

FEEDBACK: Students asked for updating the furniture with more seating by the windows and more comfortable chairs.

ACTION: Facilities and the president's office are working on replacing and updating some of the most worn furniture.

FEEDBACK: Students asked for more private study areas

RESPONSE: Unfortunately, Adler's library isn't large enough to accommodate private study rooms.  Students may use empty classrooms as private study areas, and the touch screen outside each classroom contains its schedule for that day.

More copies on reserve

FEEDBACK: The library should have all books used in classes on reserve.

RESPONSE: The library learns of which books will be used each semester when faculty submit their booklist. If we receive the list of books from the faculty in time to order them for the semester, we do, unless it is an undergraduate textbook. If faculty do not submit their booklists, we have no way of knowing what appears on their syllabi.

FEEDBACK: Students wanted access to more copies of books placed on reserve.

RESPONSE: The bookstore is separate from the library, and should have enough copies of each book for each student. The role of reserves in the library is not to provide a copy for each students. Rather they serve to augment what students might purchase for themselves.

However, when a required book is available as an unlimited access e-book we may be able to purchase it in that format, effectively providing a copy for each student.  To determine if your book is available in this format, please review this information or contact the library on your campus:

Books: more in print and non-school topics

FEEDBACK: The library should have more print books

RESPONSE: Given the three campuses, priority is made for e-books so that all three campuses can share the same book. This also affords better access for all as the books can be accessed off campus.

FEEDBACK: The library should have non-school related books

RESPONSE: Public libraries are an excellent source of non-school related books. Adler library's focus is on your academic education and on the University's curriculum.

CMHC Online access to library

FEEDBACK: The library is not open for the CMHC Online program

RESPONSE: CMHC Online Chicago campus residency runs Thursday-Sunday with classes from 9-5 and lunch 12-1. The library is open Thursdays 8a-7p, Fridays 9a-5p, and residency Saturdays 9a-2p.
